Volunteer Opportunities
Are you interested in helping your neighbors by joining one of the local life-saving fire and rescue services but worry you don't have the time, skills or ability to volunteer? Well, we have roles for everyone! There are many volunteer positions that allow individuals to serve their community regardless of time commitment, level of training or physical ability. Some positions, like a community event volunteer, require no special training. Training for other positions is provided by the departments free of charge.
Community Events Volunteers assist the departments with special events, such as open houses or fundraisers. Each department hosts a fundraising event: the Harpswell Neck Lobster Roll Luncheon, the Cundy’s Harbor Days, or the Orr’s & Bailey Islands Yard Sale and Auction. These are all fun community activities requiring a number of participants in roles suited to a wide variety of people.
Support Staff Members perform a myriad of emergency and non-emergency duties within the EMS and fire responders. Traffic control, working on a CPR response team, managing refreshments at fires, and helping to get equipment ready for service after a call are just a few examples.
Driver/Operators are specially trained and certified to operate emergency vehicles. These include the ambulances, fire engines, water tankers, squad trucks and smaller utility vehicles. Driving the paramedic response vehicle (a sports utility vehicle), following the ambulance to the hospital, is of tremendous value to the departments and community.
Junior Firefighters are auxiliary firefighters younger than 18 years old who can assist on calls that don't place them in immediate harms way.
Auxiliary Firefighters are trained to suppress fires that do not require the use of self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). They may become qualified to operate fire department vehicles and specialty tools such as the “Jaws of Life.”
Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) work closely with the town’s paramedic to provide the highest quality emergency treatment and patient transportation to our community hospitals.
Firefighters are qualified to wear SCBA to work in burning buildings suppressing fire and saving occupants. They also respond to other emergencies including vehicle crashes and environmental hazards.
